Bible Verse

Ephesians 2:10
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Reflection

Paul has just emphasized that salvation is by grace through faith and not the result of works. Then he immediately affirms the importance of good works. The order matters. We are not saved by good works; we are saved unto good works. Grace does not make obedience unnecessary. It places obedience in its proper position as the fruit rather than the cause of salvation. Calling believers God's workmanship also gives dignity to the process of spiritual growth. We are not accidental projects. God is shaping a people who increasingly reflect Christ in ordinary life. The good works before us are often less dramatic than we imagine. They include honesty, generosity, patience, service, forgiveness, hospitality, prayer, encouragement, care for the vulnerable, and faithful use of whatever responsibilities God has placed in our hands. We may spend years waiting for a “great purpose” while overlooking the good directly in front of us. Walking in good works suggests a way of life rather than occasional heroic acts. Every day offers opportunities prepared within the circumstances God has permitted us to inhabit. We do not need to earn His love through activity. We begin from grace, then ask how that grace should shape the next conversation, decision, responsibility, and relationship.

Practical Application

  • Look for one ordinary opportunity to do good today.
  • Serve someone without needing recognition.
  • Refuse to treat good works as a way of earning God's acceptance.
  • Use one ability or resource God has given you for another person's benefit.
  • Ask each morning, 'What faithful work is already in front of me?'

Prayer

Father, thank You that salvation is Your gift of grace. Help me never confuse good works with earning Your love, yet keep me eager to walk in the good You place before me. Use my ordinary actions to reflect Christ and bless others today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
