Romans 8:28 is sometimes quoted as though it means every event is good. Paul says something more careful and more comforting: God is able to work through all things for the good of those who love Him. Scripture never asks us to call evil good, suffering pleasant, or loss unimportant. The Bible gives us permission to grieve, lament, and acknowledge injustice. Yet none of those realities places us beyond God's ability to redeem, shape, teach, strengthen, and accomplish His purposes. Often we cannot see how He is working while we are inside the difficulty. Providence is clearer in hindsight than in the moment. Faith therefore rests not in our ability to explain every circumstance but in God's character. He sees connections we cannot see and consequences we cannot predict. The “good” toward which He works is ultimately described in the following verse: conformity to the image of His Son. God's purposes are larger than our immediate comfort. He may use waiting to form patience, disappointment to loosen our grip on lesser things, correction to produce humility, or hardship to deepen compassion for others. We should be cautious about telling another person exactly why God allowed a particular trial. But we can confidently say that no circumstance is wasted in His hands. Even when we do not understand the present chapter, we can trust the Author.
