Each day arrives as a gift from God, even when it does not arrive in the form we would have chosen. Psalm 118 does not tell us to rejoice because every circumstance is pleasant. It calls us to rejoice because the day itself belongs to the Lord. That changes the way we begin it. We do not have to wait until everything goes well before we can be thankful. We can recognize that God is present, that His mercies are real, and that He has given us another opportunity to trust Him, obey Him, encourage someone, and walk faithfully before Him. Some days carry celebration; others carry disappointment, uncertainty, or grief. Yet none of them are outside God's knowledge. Rejoicing is therefore not pretending that pain is absent. It is choosing to acknowledge that God's goodness is greater than the circumstances surrounding us. A thankful heart keeps us from allowing yesterday's failures or tomorrow's fears to consume today. The Lord has given us this day, not the one we wish we had and not the one we fear may come. Faithfulness begins with receiving what God has placed before us now. We can ask Him for wisdom, strength, and grace, then step into the day with confidence that every opportunity to love, serve, forgive, pray, and obey matters.
