John 20

Supplementary Note: John 20:30–31 — John’s Stated Purpose

John says the signs were written so readers may believe Jesus is the Christ and, believing, have life in His name. This purpose statement should govern interpretation of earlier signs, testimony, drawing, coming, and believing. John presents revealed evidence concerning Christ for the stated purpose of belief; descriptions of unbelief should not automatically be turned into a doctrine that revelation cannot be meaningfully received until after regeneration.
