Key Scripture: Romans 1:20 (ESV) “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.”
God has not hidden Himself. His eternal power and divine nature are manifest in what He has made. This is what we call general revelation—God has made Himself known to all people through creation, and history. Their witness is clear and available to everyone, no one can plead ignorance. The created world points unmistakably to a Creator. To reject Him, then, is not a failure of information, or withholding information but a refusal to respond to what is plainly set before us.
Related Scriptures That Clarify Our Responsibility
-
Romans 1:21: Knowing is not the same as honoring. Paul explains that, although people “knew God,” they neither glorified Him nor gave thanks. The result is futile thinking and darkened hearts. Knowledge resisted hardens the soul and distances us from the truth.
-
Romans 2:1: “Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges.” Here the “without excuse” theme confronts hypocrisy. When we judge others while doing the same things, we condemn ourselves. Moral awareness carries moral responsibility; our standards expose our own hearts first.
-
Luke 12:47: “That servant who knew his master’s will and did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating.” Jesus teaches that greater knowledge brings greater accountability. To know God’s will and refuse it is not neutral; it invites a stricter judgment.
God has not hidden Himself—creation testifies, conscience testifies, and Scripture testifies. These revelations make us responsible for what we know and how we respond. Romans 1:20 offers no absolution in ignorance of His revelation, any more than ignorance of the law excuses breaking it.
The right response is to seek Him, to revere Him, to give thanks to Him, and to bring our lives into step with His will. Creation gives us a glimpse of His power and character; conscience gives us a sense of His moral claim.
