Public Help — Ancient Literature

Clark’s Anchored in Christ provides selected ancient Jewish and Christian writings as historical and reference resources that can be read alongside biblical studies.

These works are not presented as Scripture or as possessing biblical authority. Their value is historical: they can help the reader examine writings, events, terminology and perspectives from the ancient Jewish and Christian world.

The current Ancient Literature Library contains:

• 1 Enoch — R. H. Charles English, Ethiopic tradition — 108 chapters.
• 1 Clement — J. B. Lightfoot English with Greek text — 65 chapters.
• Eusebius — Ecclesiastical History — C. F. Crusé English (1833) — 10 books containing 251 chapters.
• Josephus — Antiquities of the Jews — William Whiston English — 20 books containing 256 chapters.
• Josephus — The Wars of the Jews — William Whiston English — 7 books containing 110 chapters.
• Josephus — The Life of Flavius Josephus — William Whiston English — 76 numbered sections.
• Josephus — Against Apion — William Whiston English — 2 books containing 75 numbered sections.

The reader automatically adapts its navigation to the structure of the selected work. A simple work may use chapter navigation, while larger works such as Eusebius and Josephus provide Book → Chapter navigation.

1 Clement — English and Greek

1 Clement is currently the special case in this library because both English and Greek source texts are available.

The English is J. B. Lightfoot’s translation, while the supplied Greek text is displayed alongside it by the ancient-text reader.

The English and Greek are aligned by chapter and section, including the prologue as section 1:0.

Importantly, the Greek text has not been artificially assigned Strong’s numbers where the source itself contains no lexical tagging. Greek source text should not be made to appear more precisely lexically indexed than the underlying data actually supports.

Eusebius

Eusebius of Caesarea’s Ecclesiastical History is supplied using the C. F. Crusé English translation of 1833.

The library preserves its ten-book structure so readers can navigate naturally by Book → Chapter.

The source used for this edition was the complete public-domain Library of Congress scan supplied for the project. The reader text was extracted from its embedded OCR, running page headers were removed, and the translation itself was not modernized.

Josephus

Version 0.4.0 substantially expanded the library with four works by Flavius Josephus, using William Whiston’s public-domain English translation:

Antiquities of the Jews
The Wars of the Jews
The Life of Flavius Josephus
Against Apion

Electronic-edition/Gutenberg boilerplate and Whiston editorial footnote blocks are not included in the reader text.
