Today’s Bible Verse

Job 38:4 ESV:Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.

Today’s Reflection

The book of Job reminds us that even the most faithful believers experience seasons of suffering. Job was described as “blameless and upright” (Job 1:1, ESV), yet he endured unimaginable loss. He lost his possessions, his children, and his health, while his friends wrongly assumed his suffering must have been the result of hidden sin.

Like Job, we often ask, “Why?” when trials come. We want answers, explanations, and understanding. Yet when God finally spoke to Job, He did not explain every reason behind his suffering. Instead, He reminded Job of His infinite wisdom and sovereign power.

Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? (Job 38:4, ESV)

God’s response was not meant to discourage Job but to reassure him that the One who created the universe was fully aware of everything taking place. Job could not see the whole picture, but God could.

The same is true for us. We often see only today’s hardship, while God sees the eternal purpose behind it. His plans are always greater than our understanding.

The prophet Isaiah wrote,

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. (Isaiah 55:8, ESV)

Faith is not having all the answers—it is trusting the God who does.

By the end of the book, Job’s perspective had changed. Rather than receiving every answer he wanted, he came to know God more deeply. He declared,

I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you. (Job 42:5, ESV)

Sometimes God uses our greatest trials to draw us into a closer relationship with Himself. While we may not understand every circumstance, we can always trust His character. He is wise, faithful, loving, and good.

When life raises questions you cannot answer, remember that the God who laid the foundations of the earth is also faithfully directing every detail of your life.

Practical application

When you find yourself asking “Why?”, shift your focus from demanding answers to remembering God’s character. Spend time thanking Him for His faithfulness in the past and trust that He is working for your good, even when you cannot yet see His purpose.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You that Your wisdom is far greater than my own. Help me to trust You when I cannot understand the circumstances of my life. Strengthen my faith to rest in Your goodness, knowing that You are always working according to Your perfect will. Draw me closer to You through every trial, and help me to find peace in Your unfailing love.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
